What Every Small Business Homepage Needs: A Practical Checklist
By MashPearls · · 6 min read

Your homepage has one job: help the right visitor understand what you do, trust you, and take the next step. Most visitors decide within moments whether to stay, so every section should earn its place. Use this checklist to review your current homepage or plan a new one.
1. A headline that says what you do and who it's for
Avoid vague slogans. "Plumbing repairs and water heater installs in Austin, same-week appointments" beats "Excellence in every drop." A visitor should know they're in the right place without scrolling.
2. One clear primary action
Decide the single most valuable action (call, book, request a quote, buy) and make it the most visible button on the page. Repeat it after each major section. Secondary options such as WhatsApp or live chat can sit beside it, but they shouldn't compete.
3. Proof near the top
Real reviews, client names you have permission to show, before-and-after photos, certifications or years in business. Only use genuine proof: invented numbers or fake reviews destroy trust when people notice.
4. Your services, explained simply
Group services into a few clear categories with a sentence on what each includes and who it's for. Link each one to a page with more detail if you have it.
5. How it works
Three or four steps that show what happens after someone gets in touch. This removes uncertainty, which is one of the biggest reasons people hesitate.
6. Pricing or a pricing signal
You don't have to publish a full price list, but "starting from" prices or a clear quote process help visitors qualify themselves and save you time on calls that were never a fit.
7. Easy contact options
- A short form that asks only for what you need to reply.
- A phone number or WhatsApp link that works with one tap on mobile.
- Your service area or address, if you serve local customers.
- Opening hours, if people visit or call.
8. Mobile-first layout and fast loading
Most small business visitors arrive on a phone. Check your homepage on a real phone: are the buttons easy to tap, is the text readable without zooming, and does it load quickly on mobile data?
