If your customers are nearby, local SEO is one of the most valuable things you can invest in. It's how you show up when someone searches "electrician near me" or "bakery in Austin". The good news: most of it is about being accurate, consistent and helpful, not about tricks.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

  • Claim your profile and verify it.
  • Choose the most accurate primary category, then relevant secondary ones.
  • Add your services, service area or address, hours, phone and website.
  • Upload real photos of your work, team and premises.
  • Post updates and offers regularly.

2. Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google profile, social media and directories. Inconsistencies confuse both customers and search engines.

3. Get genuine reviews, and reply to them

Ask happy customers for reviews soon after a job is done; a short link makes it easy. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically. Never buy reviews or write fake ones; it violates platform rules and can get your profile suspended.

4. Make your website locally relevant

  • Mention the towns or neighborhoods you serve, naturally, on relevant pages.
  • Create a page for each core service, with a clear description and call to action.
  • Include your contact details in the footer of every page.
  • Embed a map or list your service area on your contact page.

5. Get the technical basics right

  • Unique page titles and meta descriptions for every page.
  • A fast, mobile-friendly site with HTTPS.
  • An XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
  • Structured data (schema) describing your business.
  • Descriptive image file names and alt text.

6. Earn local links and mentions

Quality beats quantity. Good sources include local chambers of commerce, business associations, suppliers you work with, local news, community sponsorships and reputable industry directories. Avoid paid link schemes and spammy directories; they can hurt more than help.

7. Publish genuinely useful content

Answer the questions customers ask you every week: prices, how long things take, how to choose. Helpful articles build trust and give search engines more reasons to show your site.
